It is that time of year when the DeSilver family gathers around in the living room. No, I am not talking about Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas. Nor am I talking about Halloween plans, even though crystal balls and tarot cards may have been used! With two weeks left in the season, JW, Lee Ann and I all gathered in the living room Saturday morning with electronic devices in hand. Yep, it was time to figure out who was alive and who did not stand a chance to make the playoffs in Oklahoma high school football. Now, understand our findings may not be without a mistake here or there, but trust me, we did not leave a stone unturned during our gathering. At the end of the regular season the top four teams in the District advance to the Playoffs, with hopes of State Championship gold on their minds. If two teams tie, then we go to the head-to-head matchup with the winner getting in or the higher seed.

The fun starts if three teams are tied at the end. First, if one team has beat both of the other teams, then that team gets in; however, if the three teams have beat each other then we go to the District point system. Each team is awarded points for margin of victory or loss during each game during the season. For each game you cannot gain or lose more than 15 points and they continue to add up during the District schedule. If you look at the standings below, that is what is in the column +/-. So, what is the best scenario for Elgin? Go win the next two games and then go sit back and see what happens with the other teams in the District. One loss does not eliminate the Owls but it does put them in a situation where they need a lot of help to still make it to the second season.

So, with Halloween upon us, anybody up for a little Elgin Owls' Magic?
